Nearly one million bets from New Hampshire came in during the 38-daylong World Cup, generating two-and-half times more money than the last Super Bowl involving the New England Patriots, according to state lottery officials.
The 900,000 individual bets were placed during the soccer tournament’s 104 matches totaled almost $24 million played.
By comparison, there was $9 million bet in last February’s Super Bowl in which the Patriots lost to the Seattle Seahawks.
Charlie McIntyre, the lottery’s executive director, said what helped to boost the appeal of soccer spectacle was that Boston hosted some of the matches at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., on the same field the Patriots play.
“Whether our players watched live, on TV, or followed along online, the results have exceeded our expectations,” McIntyre said.
Maura McCann, the lottery’s chief spokeswoman, said the World Cup also became super popular because it was held during the summer with all matches in North America.
The U.S., Canada and Mexico co-hosted the affair.
By contrast, the last World Cup in 2022 was in Qatar and it took place in November and December to avoid the extremely hot summer weather.
As a result, the Qatar matches competed for attention against three of the state’s major sports that were playing at the time, the National Football League, National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League.

In 2022, the New Hampshire Lottery took in $6 million of bets for that World Cup.
“We certainly expected an increase in wagers, and handle with more favorable match times, the tournament being hosted locally and less competition from the big four leagues in North America,” McCann said.
The most popular betting activity included goal scorer markets, with over $2 million bet in that manner as well as which teams would advance out of the group stage, which was also bet for $2 million officials said.
Another popular bet was the total number of goals to be scored in a given game, officials said.
McIntyre had said about two-thirds of the way into the tournament that France had been the team most picked by New Hampshire bettors to win the top prize of $50 million and bragging rights.
France lost in the third-place game Saturday to England, 6-4.
In the final on Sunday, Spain beat Argentina, 1-0.
Beyond the U.S., the teams most bet on to either win or lose were Argentina and England, McCann said.
Another part of the gambling handle (or where they money was wagered), McCann added, had been prop bets, such as the player to score first or the total number of goals a player would get in the entire tournament along with a player’s total shots on goal and team totals, such as how many shots or throw-ins or corner kicks that a team would have in a game.
New Hampshire has an exclusive sports-betting contract with DraftKings, which shares 50% of its retail gross gaming revenues with the state. That money is then used to help fund public education.
