Fans and players heading to the 2026 World Cup Final soccer match at MetLife Stadium in northern New Jersey on Sunday may have to dodge some raindrops and some lightning.
Weather forecasters say there’s a 60% chance of rain showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms during the match, which is set to kick off at 3 p.m.
“Rain gear may be needed for the soccer match,” AccuWeather said in its preliminary forecast for the East Rutherford area Sunday afternoon. “Lightning may delay the match.”
Although the weekend forecast isn’t locked in yet, the National Weather Service‘s New York regional forecast office says “a stalled frontal system to the south and a frontal wave tracking along it will increase rain chances for the weekend.”
As of now, temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-80s on Sunday afternoon, and forecasters are calling for a mix of sun and clouds.
Winds will be blowing lightly, between 9 mph and 10 mph, during the soccer match. But if any strong thunderstorms target East Rutherford, winds could gust as high as 50 to 60 mph.
The National Weather Service’s New Jersey office says some of the thunderstorms that develop this weekend “could be severe and also may produce heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding.”
However, it’s difficult to predict this early where and when the thunderstorms will set up, and how strong they will be.
