World Cup concession prices have already become one of the tournament’s loudest off-pitch talking points.

Scotland fans in Boston saw beer prices rise sharply, with some stadium drinks costing close to $20. Supporters at Canada vs Bosnia were also stunned by food and drink boards showing premium beer at 24.25 Canadian dollars and a cheeseburger at 25.25 Canadian dollars.

That wider frustration made the prices at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta stand out even more. After several venues left travelling fans braced for expensive matchdays, Atlanta offered a much more welcome surprise.

The stadium’s X account revealed prices that looked far kinder than many fans expected during a World Cup.

Chips are listed at $3.50, French fries at $3 and a cheeseburger at $5. Beer is also cheaper than at several other venues, with a 20oz American draft at $9 and a 20oz craft or import draft at $11.

The reaction was immediate. One fan wrote: “I honestly thought this post was satire at first. Like legit thought it was fake. Bravo for making concessions affordable!”

Another added: “Thank you Atlanta for not taking advantage of our guests,” while a third summed up the reaction stating: “As always… much respect for not price gouging the fans.”

That matters because Atlanta Stadium, as Mercedes-Benz Stadium is called during the tournament, is not a minor venue.

It will host eight World Cup matches, including five group games, a Round of 32 match, a Round of 16 tie and a semifinal.

With Spain, Morocco, Haiti and South Africa among the teams scheduled there, thousands of fans will feel the difference.
