The WNBA continues to make news nearly daily, and most of it has nothing to do with the on-court product that packs arenas and sets television viewing records.
The league posted and then deleted a video on social media featuring Dallas Wings guard Paige Bueckers and Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese during All-Star Weekend. The two teams played on Wednesday, July 29, as the second half of the season got underway this week.
In the video, Bueckers and Reese are shown talking about betting each other $400 over which team would win the game. The caption on the post read "We did?" with a laughing emoji, "Paige Bueckers on the bet she made with Angel Reese at All-Star Weekend on tonight's matchup."
The WNBA deleted the post, but not before it was screenshot and reposted.
The league's bylaws prohibit any wagering on games, as the new Collective Bargaining Agreement states in Article XIV, Player Conduct and Discipline section.
"Any player found by the Commissioner after a hearing to have been guilty of wagering (directly or indirectly), or of offering or attempting to wager, money or anything of value on the outcome, score, or any other aspect of any WNBA Competition shall, in the sole discretion of the Commissioner, be subject to a fine, suspension, and/or dismissal and disqualification from any further association with the WNBA," Section 5(c) states.
The Dream ended up beating the Wings 82-81, and when Reese was asked about the wager during the post-game press conference, Reese replied, "I will be requesting her Apple Pay after this.
