Wisconsin women’s hockey gets overall No. 2 seed for NCAA Tournament

MADISON – The Wisconsin women’s hockey team spent the entire season ranked No. 1 in the polls.

But for the NCAA Tournament, the Badgers are the No. 2 overall seed.

The bracket reveal Sunday, March 8, showed Wisconsin (32-4-2) seeded behind Ohio State, which beat the Badgers in the WCHA final March 7 in St. Paul, Minn.

The Badgers, who are the defending champions, are chasing their fourth straight Frozen Four berth.

To reach it, they will have to beat Quinnipiac (28-8-3) or Franklin Pierce (22-11). Those teams will play at LaBahn Arena at 7 p.m Thursday, March 12. The regional final will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 14.

The 11-team field seeds the top five teams. After Ohio State and Wisconsin were (in order) Penn State, Minnesota and Northeastern.

Should UW reach the national semifinals, it could face Penn State on the Nittany Lions’ home ice. The Frozen Four will be played at Pegula Ice Arena in University Park, Penn., on March 20-22.

Quinnipiac won its first ECAC title since 2016​


The Bobcats finished third in the ECAC during the regular season, but knocked off No. 2 seed Princeton 2-1 in the conference tournament semifinals, and defeated No. 1 seed Yale 5-1 in the championship. Junior Kahlen Lamarche is a top-10 finalist for the Patty Kazmaier player of the year award. Sophomore goaltender Felicia Frank was the conference tournament MVP and is a top-three finalist for the Hockey Commissioners Association goaltender of the year.

Franklin Pierce won NEWHA regular season, tournament titles​


The Ravens, who were picked to finish fourth in the preseason poll, won the regular-season title in the New England Women’s Hockey Alliance and then captured their first tournament title since 2022. Junior Jill Hertl was named the goaltender of the year in the conference. Senior defender Maggie Korneta was a first team all-conference selection.
