Freshman point guard Daniel Freitag joined the list of Wisconsin's transfer portal departures on Monday.

The former four-star recruit exits after appearing in 14 games in his one year with the program, scoring a total of just two points over 29 minutes of action. The Minnesota native and top recruit joined the Badgers with high expectations, headlining the program's class of 2024. He will now look to fulfill that top potential elsewhere.

Wisconsin moves to the rest of its offseason with reserve guards Freitag and Camren Hunter gone to the portal. The program has yet to receive a transfer commitment, although the cycle only officially began on March 24.

In addition to those two departures, head coach Greg Gard and his staff must work to replace the top-end production of a fantastic departing senior class, including starters Max Klesmit, John Tonje and Steven Crowl, and key role players Kamari McGee and Carter Gilmore. While neither Hunter nor Freitag played significant minutes in 2024-25, both were clear options for increased roles in 2025-26, especially with the lineup's number of departing minutes and production.

With that recent movement, headlined by Freitag's departure, here is an updated look at Wisconsin's projected 2025-26 starting lineup and rotation:

Wisconsin Projected 2025-26 Starting Lineup

  • Guard: John Blackwell (Junior)
  • Guard: Jack Janicki (Sophomore)
  • Wing: Transfer (TBD)
  • Forward: Xavier Amos (Senior) OR Transfer (TBD)
  • Forward: Nolan Winter (Junior)

Wisconsin's transfer portal additions will significantly alter this projection. The one guarantee is that Blackwell and Winter will lead the starting lineup in 2025-26. Next to them, both Janicki and Amos could step into starting roles after playing significant reserve minutes in 2024-25. However, the program adding top-end transfer talent at each respective position would change that outlook, moving the two into the prominent bench roles that McGee and Gilmore played this past season. As of March 31, Blackwell and Winter could start with anywhere between one and three transfers next season.

  • Guard Jack Robison (Sophomore)
  • Center Riccardo Greppi (Sophomore)
  • Guard Hayden Jones (Freshman)
  • Guard Zach Kinziger (Freshman)
  • Center Will Garlock (Freshman)

Janicki and Amos will likely join this group when Wisconsin lands veteran transfers at guard and forward.

Freitag and Hunter's departures will most impact the team's guard depth. Their respective moves now open the door for sophomore Jack Robison, freshman Zach Kinziger and freshman Hayden Jones to earn significant reserve minutes. That, or Wisconsin will find a transfer similar to grow into a sixth-man role, as McGee did over three years with the program.

We will return to this projection once Wisconsin begins to add transfers and reload its roster entering next season.
