The New England Patriots are all in on another Super Bowl run after agreeing to trade for Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver A.J. Brown on Monday.
It's a blockbuster move that stacks the deck for the Patriots at the wide receiver position. They now have Brown, a three-time All-Pro receiver, joining an emerging young talent in Romeo Doubs. The team still also has Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III on the roster.
Patriots quarterback Drake Maye will have no shortage of receivers to throw the ball to in 2026. That's a good thing considering Maye is coming off a year where he was the runner-up for the NFL MVP award behind Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.
With that said, there are real winners and losers with Brown landing in New England. Let's take a look at who stands to gain and lose in this blockbuster deal.
There's a dream world out there where the Patriots have A.J. Brown, Stefon Diggs and Romeo Doubs on the field together.
Nothing is impossible, as evident in the Los Angeles Rams' trade for Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett. But Brown's arrival in New England likely ruins a potential Patriots reunion with Diggs. That doesn't mean the 32-year-old star wide receiver won't have other options on the free agent market. It will be stepping into the unknown after he found incredible chemistry with Drake Maye and led the Patriots with 1,013 receiving yards last season.
Maye has a new No. 1 receiver.
The addition of Brown will give the young quarterback an elite target on the outside to attack opposing defenses. That goes without mentioning Romeo Doubs, who should help fill the void left by Diggs. The combination of Brown and Doubs could make for one of the best one-two punch receiving combinations in the NFL.
Kayshon Boutte probably saw the writing on the wall this offseason with the team signing Doubs and the ongoing Brown trade rumors. Entering the final year of his rookie contract, it was made clear from the start that the Patriots weren't making him a priority. That doesn't mean they wouldn't love to have him back on the roster in 2026, but the redundancy at wide receiver likely means his time in New England is almost up.
The arrival of Brown means it won't all fall on Doubs' shoulders. He won't be expected to step up as the No. 1 receiving option in New England, which should make him even more dangerous. Brown taking up the brunt of the attention on the field means Doubs will get single coverage looks that he never saw in Green Bay. It could lead to him setting new career-highs in 2026.
Brown and Doubs joining New England could mean fewer opportunities for a young, emerging player, like second-year wide receiver Kyle Williams. A more depleted receiving corps would have had to depend on Williams more on offense. That likely means another season of the former third-round pick being utilized on limited snaps in an offense that also has Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas and Efton Chism III, along with the top receiving options in Brown and Doubs.
