Everyone talks about the weather, but it's May in Central Indiana, so forecasts for Indianapolis 500 practice, qualifying and — in particular — the race are getting more attention.
Whether they're looking for "a window over Terre Haute" or "what's happening north of the I-70 corridor," folks are looking toward the sky and at their weather apps with a little more urgency.
Will it rain on race day, May 25? A storm arrived at Indianapolis Motor Speedway shortly after noon on race day in 2024, delaying the start for about 4 hours and fouling up Kyle Larson's "Double" attempt.
This is what we're seeing on May 1.
There's little interruption of on-track action, with rain forecast for Thursday, May 15. The IndyCar Grand Prix, Indy 500 qualifying, Carb Day and the race all get a thumbs-up, with highs most days in the 70s.
The IndyCar Grand Prix may see some rain — but the cars will run on the road course — and the first day of Indy 500 practice on May 13 could have an issue. After that, partly sunny or sunny skies are the rule, with race day temperatures in the upper 70s.
It should be great for the IndyCar Grand Prix on May 9-10, with partly sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s.
The first couple of days of Indy 500 practice look good, with highs around 80 degrees.
Then it gets dicey. There is at least a 50% chance of rain on Thursday and Fast Friday and — after partly cloudy day with highs in the low 80s for the first day of qualifying — rain is forecast to return Pole/Bump Day on Sunday.
Rain has about a 50% chance of interrupting Carb Day on May 23 as temperatures hit the upper 70s.
Race day includes a 70% chance of rain and highs in the low 80s.
