You’ve seen it by now: the Seattle Seahawks completed the craziest two-point conversion of all time as part of their legendary comeback against the Los Angeles Rams last night.

Down 30-28 with 6:23 to go in the game and a chance to tie it, quarterback Sam Darnold threw a screen pass to running back Zach Charbonnet which the Rams blew up. It tipped off of defensive end Jared Verse’s hand and helmet before bouncing into the end zone. Although the play was whistled dead shortly after, Charbonnet walked into the end zone and picked the ball up before bringing it back. The play went under further review and was called a backwards pass and fumble, meaning Charbonnet’s nonchalant pickup of the ball converted the try and the Seahawks tied the game.

Amazon Prime’s play-by-play broadcasters Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit immediately called it the craziest two-point conversion of all time, and every reaction since has agreed in some form. Seattle’s detractors are upset the play was whistled dead when it was technically still live, and overturned in the Seahawks favor. Seattle’s supporters say the call is technically correct and that it was an excellent heads-up play by Charbonnet despite the early whistle. Both are true.

On one hand, the rulebook says that passes are never fumbles. Since laterals exist, backward passes can hit the ground, and regardless of if an opposing player touches it, it’s a live ball. The referees whistled it dead because they thought it was a forward pass, but after reviewing it to be backwards, it’s a clear fumble. Charbonnet’s picking up of it was all that mattered.

It’ll be fascinating to see if the NFL amends their language on these rules for the 2026 season after the kerfuffle caused Thursday night- but it certainly worked for the Seahawks in that one in a million situation.
