Tyler Adams is no stranger to a yellow card.

The aggressive defensive midfielder earned one in the United States' opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making him the only player in danger of a yellow-card suspension in match two against Australia.

The yellow cards rule at World Cups has always felt a bit harsh, but it now has Adams in focus on each challenge he makes against the Socceroos.

And if Adams makes it through the Australia match unscathed, he'll face a similar reality against Turkiye in the third group stage match.

How a 2nd yellow card would suspend Tyler Adams

Two yellow cards total within the group stage at the World Cup equals a one-game suspension.

Adams already got one against Paraguay, so just one more would lead to the suspension for accumulation.

The key this year for Adams would be to make it to the end of the group stage without a second, because amnesty rules changed this year.

The yellow card count resets after the group stage.

You could miss the Round of 32 if you get your second yellow in the final group match, but if you make it through the group with just one, your counter is then at zero to begin the Round of 32.

The next erasure comes after the quarterfinal. You could be suspended for the semifinal if you get a yellow in the Round of 16 and then again in the quarters, but the only way to be suspended from the final is a red card.
