Stefon Diggs was the No. 1 wide receiver on the Super Bowl finalist New England Patriots in the 2025 NFL season.

Right now, though, he's still a free agent as the calendar moves into July.

It's at least a bit hard to reconcile, and it has the football world wondering what might happen next with Diggs.

Take this tweet from ex-NFL wideout Torrey Smith earlier this offseason:

There is a wide receiver that is a free agent that had 85 catches and over a 1000 yards last year.

I'd want him on my team.

Smith shared that thought more than a month ago, and Diggs still doesn't have a team.

Why is Stefon Diggs still a free agent?

There surely isn't just one reason here, but rather a combination of factors.

On the one hand, it makes some sense. Diggs is an aging wideout who probably isn't worth the price he's asking for, particularly after some off-field troubles.

On the other hand, Diggs is coming off yet another quality season, and there are always teams in need of more help at wide receiver.

There is another layer to this, though, that's hard to know from the outside: Diggs could also have decided to be patient here.

Veteran free agents with proven track records often take a bit longer to sign. They not only have to negotiate a fair value with a team, but they also are looking for the right opportunity.

The last thing a player like Diggs wants is to sign somewhere and have it turn out that he's deeper down the depth chart than expected.

By waiting things out a bit, Diggs (or guys like Deebo Samuel and Joey Bosa) can ensure there's a sizable role waiting with a new team.

Diggs isn't incentivized to rush. Maybe this really is just patience.

Or maybe the market for Diggs just isn't what it would've been in the past.

Either way, he's still waiting, and it's not clear when his patience might be rewarded.
