Why Rudy Gobert thinks it's a hard task for Timberwolves to beat Victor Wembanyama, Spurs originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
If there is one person in the association who knows Victor Wembanyama the most, it is Rudy Gobert. Both of them have played for France in the 2024 Olympics but will now be facing each other in the NBA Playoffs. A lot of things have changed for both of them. This is probably why the Minnesota Timberwolves big man knows that their matchup with the San Antonio Spurs will be one for the ages.
Gobert knows it'll be hard for Timberwolves to beat Spurs
Many factors start to come up for why the Spurs are heavily-favored against the Timberwolves. Victor Wembanyama being an NBA MVP candidate, the Spurs becoming a second seed in the Western Conference, and Gregg Popovich helping Mitch Johnson to scheme against Chris Finch are just some of those concerns. But, Rudy Gobert thinks that there is one big thing that they have not yet accounted for, via Jared Weiss of The Athletic.
"He’s completely free on the court, and he’s really starting to master his craft, even though he still has a lot of growth upon him. It’s pretty amazing to see that he’s 22, but also, he’s already mastering his craft. Obviously, I think a lot of the growth that he had is going to be physical. Keep getting stronger, keep being more resistant," the Timberwolves big man declared. "He has the extra discipline that the greats have, and he puts in the work. He understands that, obviously, his body is the key, and his mind. He’s really trying to master both."
Wembanyama's growth cannot be understated despite it being his first run in the NBA Playoffs. Ever since getting drafted just three seasons ago, the Spurs superstar has won an Olympics silver medal, notched Rookie of the Year, became the only unanimous Defensive Player of the Year, and rose to being an NBA MVP finalist.
Gobert knew that the Spurs superstar would grow but the rate of his growth has been insane. This NBA Playoffs series between the Timberwolves will be one for the ages. Not just because they are two of the most talented squads but because a pair of centers who had a deep relationship are now going to duke it out for a chance at their first Larry O'Brien trophy.
