The Toronto Maple Leafs have a lot going on.

And while Auston Matthews is crucial to their future, he's not the only thing to get worked out.

That means that the Leafs haven't been able to meet with Matthews in person yet this offseason.

While that might sound alarming as trade speculation swirls, it's actually not as big a deal as it might seem.

What's happening with Auston Matthews?

Matthews is healing from surgery while residing in Arizona, which makes things more complicated.

That's what NHL insider Elliotte Friedman explained on his latest 32 Thoughts podcast.

The Maple Leafs are working on conducting interviews to hire a new head coach, and they're also working through the scouting process for the 2026 NHL Draft, in which they have the No. 1 overall pick.

Getting to Arizona to see Matthews would be implausible, Freidman said.

The Maple Leafs' new front office leaders John Chayka and Mats Sundin did have a "lengthy" Zoom call with Matthews recently, Friedman added, and the insider said the meeting went well.

The reporting Friedman has done all along, that Matthews wants to win in Toronto, appears to remain true.

For now, though, he's back in his home state healing up and waiting like everyone else to see just what the Leafs do with their other big offseason decisions.
