Why is Alec Bohm not starting? Phillies going with new 3B tonight vs. Cubs originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

Entering the 2026 MLB season, the Philadelphia Phillies seemingly had an everyday option at multiple positions across the roster, third base included.

Alec Bohm, normally, would start every day, or at least for most of the games this season. But that's not the case, as he's sitting against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night.

There's a good reason for that. According to Tim Kelly of On Pattison, Rob Thomson wanted to get Edmundo Sosa into the lineup, not just for Tuesday's game, but for Wednesday's game as well.

Why is Alec Bohm sitting for Edmundo Sosa

"Even with the Cubs set to start a righty tomorrow in Colin Rea, Edmundo Sosa will start at third, per Rob Thomson," Kelly reports. "He wants to get him some ABs before starting Wednesday against ***** Imanaga. Thomson was impressed with Alec Bohm's ABS tonight."

While the Cubs made a slight change, going with the lefty opener against the Phillies on Tuesday night, the plan still remains intact for the Phillies.

As seen in their lineup announcement, the Phillies are rolling with Sosa at third base along with the regulars in the starting lineup. Bohm sits against the lefty opener and righty in Colin Roa, while Sosa gets another start before his Wednesday start.

Thomson is trying to prepare Sosa to start on Wednesday against ***** Imanaga, the lefty Cubs ace. Instead of making Sosa get the start while cold, the Phillies are trying to get Sosa into the lineup more to get him ready for his start on Wednesday.

But, obviously, this move is also in part due to how Bohm has been hitting this season. He has a .155 batting average with a bleak .455 OPS. He does have 10 RBIs, but his production at the plate isn't good enough to keep him starting every day.

The Phillies are changing things up, sitting Bohm a day after he got his first hit since April sixth. Sosa gets the start, as the Phillies plan for Wednesday's matchup against the Cubs' lefty ace.
