MLB teams don't often promote players from Double-A to the major leagues.

That's especially true for the San Francisco Giants, whose Double-A affiliate is located all the way in Richmond, Virginia.

That didn't stop them from bringing Jonah Cox up for his MLB debut on Sunday, though.

Cox hasn't played a game at the Triple-A level yet, but it didn't matter to the Giants.

They're bringing him to the majors, and they're hoping he can help.

Why did the Giants call up Jonah Cox from Double-A?​

The Giants needed a spark, and Cox is the kind of guy who can provide it.

He's a 6-foot-2 outfielder who was drafted out of Oral Roberts in the sixth round of the 2023 MLB Draft by the A's.

The Giants got Cox in a trade in 2024 for Ross Stripling.

And this season, Cox is raking.

He's batting .400 through 44 games at Double-A. He has 11 doubles, five triples and six home runs.

It's much better than he's hit at any stretch of his pro career before this, and Cox even had 27 steals in 34 attempts.

It may not translate to the MLB level, but if it does even a little bit, it'll be the kind of boost the Giants could certainly use. Their slow start to the season can't just be attributed to "it's early" anymore, because the calendar is about to flip to June.

Cox is an unconventional potential savior, but he's the best chance the Giants haven't given a try to yet.
