Why Connor McDavid is Team Canada's captain for Olympic semifinal vs. Finland originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Connor McDavid has earned a big honor.
On Friday, the Edmonton Oilers superstar will don the captain's 'C' for Team Canada in the Olympic semifinal against Finland.
McDavid, widely acknowledged as the best hockey player on the planet, was previously an alternate captain during this tournament.
The reason for his promotion isn't what he would've wanted, though.

Why is Connor McDavid the Canada captain?
McDavid is stepping in as Canada's captain because Sidney Crosby is injured.
It doesn't necessarily work like this in the NHL. Even if a team's captain is out, they remain the captain.
In IIHF rules, though, an active roster always has to have a guy with the 'C'.
So with Crosby unable to play due to his lower-body injury, someone had to get upgraded to captain for at least this game.

Cale Makar and McDavid were the two alternates, and it's McDavid who gets the nod.
McDavid has been the Edmonton captain since the 2016-17 season, so it's a letter he's used to having on his jersey.
Wearing it in the Olympics for Team Canada has to be a whole extra level of special for him.
