Why Christian Gonzalez’s Potential Extension Might be Held Up by Other NFL Star Corner originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
New England Patriots star cornerback Christian Gonzalez is gearing up for a major payday, but how much money he makes might rely on what happens around the NFL.
As a wave of elite young defensive backs approach their own mega-extensions across the league, the Patriots' shutdown corner is in a prime position to sit back, let the market set a lucrative floor, and eventually reset the position's pay scale.
Since being selected 17th overall in 2023, the 24-year-old cornerback has rapidly established himself as the focal point of New England's defense. Despite missing most of his rookie campaign due to injury, Gonzalez bounced back with stellar back-to-back campaigns, routinely blanketing opposing primary receivers and limiting pass-catchers to under 55% completion rates in coverage.
Now, Gonzalez is in talks for an extension, but the hold-up isn't necessarily a lack of willingness from New England’s front office.
Christian Gonzalez extension paired to other superstar cornerback
Entering his fourth season in the NFL, Gonzalez is expected to be one of the highest-paid cornerbacks in the league when he reaches an extension with New England. Instead, both sides are waiting on the impending deal for Seattle Seahawks star cornerback Devon Witherspoon.
Selected five picks apart in the first round of the 2023 draft, Gonzalez and Witherspoon are both represented by the same agency, Wind Sports. With Seattle reportedly putting an offer on the table upwards of $30 million annually, Gonzalez's camp is content to let Witherspoon reset the market first.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Gonzalez is in "no rush" to sign an extension.

"The Patriots want a new deal for Christian Gonzalez and he wants a deal, and if he gets one it would make him one of, if not the, highest-paid cornerback in the NFL," Rapoport said. "But it's really not that simple. There's another cornerback situation going on in Seattle with star corner Devon Witherspoon... the two negotiations have been going on concurrently. It seems Witherspoon is further along."
Rapoport went on to say that the Seahawks are reportedly tabling an offer near $30 million per season to Witherspoon. Gonzalez can comfortably wait for his draft-mate to ink his deal first, using that fresh contract as the launchpad to reset the position's pay scale entirely.
Highest-paid cornerbacks in NFL
Gonzalez and Witherspoon are set to join some elite company if they sign extensions with their teams.
