OXFORD — Ole Miss football is among the three finalists for five-star 2027 running back David Gabriel Georges, but recruiting experts indicate the Rebels are a long shot to close the deal.
Gabriel Georges is one of the top prospects in the nation and has cut his list of potential schools to Ole Miss, Tennessee and Ohio State. He is a 6-foot, 205-pound running back from Baylor School in Chattanooga. He rushed for 1,749 yards and 27 touchdowns in 2025.
Gabriel Georges is the No. 10 overall prospect in the 2027 class and the No. 2 running back, according to the 247Sports Composite. There are 39 players with a five-star ranking in the 2027 class, and Gabriel Georges is one of three remaining uncommitted five-star recruits.
That will change July 22. Gabriel Georges will announce his commitment at 4:30 p.m. CT on the CBS Sports College Football YouTube channel.
The Clarion Ledger spoke to recruiting experts to evaluate where Ole Miss stands.
Gabriel Georges exploded on the scene by winning Tennessee's Mr. Football award as a sophomore in the Division II-AAA level. Tennessee and Ohio State are the two teams that jumped out to an early lead in his recruitment.
247Sports Tennessee recruiting reporter Ryan Callahan said Gabriel Georges has family members who are Ohio State fans, and it's been a familiar program to him. Gabriel Georges has visited Tennessee seven times, which is the most of any school.
"It has just sounded from the start like Tennessee and Ohio State were going to be two of the teams to beat throughout the process since the very early stages of his recruitment," Callahan said.
Garrick Hodge, an Ohio State recruiting reporter for 247Sports, said Buckeyes running backs coach Carlos Locklyn has formed one of the strongest relationships with Gabriel Georges. Locklyn has traveled to Canada to meet Gabriel Georges' family.
"I just think that Tennessee and Ohio State have always been near the top of David's wish list," Hodge said. "I think they've sort of separated themselves over the last six months, at least, but really a year going back. Ohio State's really always kind of been the leader in the race, and then Tennessee kind of charged this summer when they hosted him on an official visit."
Hodge feels the race is down to two schools.
"Never say never in modern recruiting, but I would be pretty shocked if he picks the Rebels on Wednesday," Hodge said.
Ole Miss 247Sports recruiting reporter Kam Wicker said he also thought it was down to Tennessee and Ohio State.
Wicker said new Ole Miss running backs coach Frank Wilson has been a positive in recruiting Gabriel Georges. Running back Shekai Mills-Knight, who is entering his sophomore season at Ole Miss, played with Gabriel Georges at Baylor. Ole Miss also has a commitment from Class of 2027 Baylor quarterback Keegan Croucher.
Mills-Knight was ranked as a four-star recruit. He, like Gabriel Georges, is originally from Canada.
"I think those two things, those relationships with those two guys, with Frank Wilson, with the staff in there, has put Ole Miss in a good spot to at least be in the back of Gabriel George's mind," Wicker said.
The star running back has not explicitly ruled Ole Miss out, but he has alluded to his choice coming down to two options.
In an interview with On3's Chris Low that published July 13, Gabriel Georges explained the difficulty of his decision.
"It’s hard. You feel this way, like you know, and then it’s sort of 50-50," Gabriel Georges said. "People will say the 22nd of July is far off, but honestly for me, it’s pretty close."
Low reported Tennessee has made the largest offer to Gabriel Georges in the range of $2 million per year for three years and that Ohio State's offer is around $1 million annually.
Ole Miss has 22 players committed in its 2027 class but no running backs.
A wide-open class could be seen as a good thing in the recruitment of a star like Gabriel Georges, but it doesn't distinguish Ole Miss from Ohio State or Tennessee.
Neither the Buckeyes nor Vols have a running back committed in the 2027 class.
