The high school boys basketball season is just past the midway point, with plenty of talented players to watch in Manitowoc and Sheboygan counties.

Here are the best 32 candidates up for midseason player of the year, in alphabetical order.

At the bottom of the story will be a poll to vote for which player you feel is having the best season so far. Voting is open until noon on Jan. 31.

Owen Birschbach, so., New Holstein​


Birschbach has burst onto the scene for the Huskies, averaging a team-high 18.9 points and 7.2 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game.

Logan Brunner, sr., Kiel​


Brunner is averaging 16.2 ppg to power the Raiders offense.

Blake Buhr, sr., Sheboygan North​


The elder of the two Buhr brothers, he averages 18 ppg to lead the Golden Raiders.

Rylan Buhr, so., Sheboygan North​


Rylan is the team leader in rebounds (5.6) and assists (3.4) while also averaging 17.3 ppg.

Donovan Cowley, sr., Roncalli​


Cowley leads the Jets with 22 ppg and also has a team-best 6.4 rpg and 2.8 spg.

Trace Damrow, jr., Howards Grove​


Damrow is the Tigers leader in points (21.8), rebounds (8.1) and steals (2.2).

Cade Dirkse, sr., Oostburg​


Dirkse leads the Flying Dutchmen with 7.8 apg while averaging 16.9 ppg as well.

Will Franzen, sr., Manitowoc Lutheran​


Franzen’s 13.2 ppg and 5.1 rpg lead the Lancers.

Cameron Ferriano, sr., Sheboygan Christian​


Ferriano’s 16.8 ppg are tops for the Eagles this season.

Ethan Fromm, sr., Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah​


Fromm is averaging 19.2 ppg this season while leading the Resorters in rebounds (6.2) and assists (4.5).

Nolan Groh, sr., Sheboygan South​


Groh is averaging nearly a double-double with 12.9 ppg and a team-high 9.2 rpg.

Owen Gulke, sr., Cedar Grove-Belgium​


Gulke powers the Rockets offense with 19.8 ppg.

Maddix Gulseth, jr., Roncalli​


Gulseth is averaging a robust 20.3 ppg while shooting 36.5% from beyond the arc.

Brennen Hackbarth, sr., Sheboygan Lutheran​


Hackbarth recently broke the 1,000-point plateau for his career and leads the Crusaders in points (23.1) and rebounds (8.6).

Micah Kubsch, sr., Manitowoc Lincoln​


Kubsch is the Ships leading scorer at 17 ppg.

Braydon Lowrance-Eischen, jr., Ozaukee​


Lowrance-Eischen is the leading scorer for Ozaukee, averaging 19.9 ppg.

Michael Merlo, fr., Random Lake​


Merlo has exploded on the scene for the Rams, averaging 25.5 ppg while also leading the team in assists (1.8) and steals (1.2).

McCoy Michael, so., Sheboygan Lutheran​


Michael averages 15.3 ppg while leading the Crusaders with 2.2 spg.

Keaton Milbrath, sr., Howards Grove​


Milbrath is averaging 16.3 ppg for the Tigers.

Chase Mills, sr., Ozaukee​


Mills averages 17.6 ppg while leading Ozaukee in rebounds (7.3), assists (3.0) and steals (2.6).

Nolan Pedrin, sr., Sheboygan South​


Pedrin leads the Redwings with 16.7 ppg this season.

Ben Petrie, so., Sheboygan Falls​


Petrie is the Falcons leading scorer at 12.9 ppg while also having a team-high 2.7 apg.

Ben Prochnow, sr., Reedsville​


Prochnow is the only player in the area to average a double-double with points and assists instead of rebounds. He’s averaging 21.3 ppg and 10.4 apg while also leading the Panthers with 3.7 spg.

Carter Schmitz, sr., Cedar Grove-Belgium​


Schmitz is averaging 18.3 ppg for the Rockets.

Kayden Schultz, sr., Plymouth​


Schultz, the Panthers all-time leading scorer, leads the team in points (28.3), assists (4.0) and steals (2.1). He’s recently broke the 2,000-point mark for his career as well.

Noah Shillcox, sr., Two Rivers​


Shillcox averages 14.9 ppg and 2.2 spg, which are both tops on the Raiders.

Brayden Smith, so., Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah​


Smith leads the Resorters in scoring at 22.1 ppg and his 1.6 spg are also tops on the team.

Mason Staudinger, jr., Valders​


Staudinger’s 20.4 ppg leads the Vikings as does his 6.8 rpg and 3.1 apg.

Arden Strenn, sr., Mishicot​


Strenn averages 17.7 ppg and a team-high 7.5 rpg for the Panthers.

Bradley Wendricks, so., Mishicot​


Wendricks is averaging team highs in points (16.5), assists (3.0) and steals (1.6) for Mishicot.

JJ Zavatchin, sr., Oostburg​


Zavatchin become the Flying Dutchmen’s all-time leading scorer this season as well as crossing the 2,000-point plateau while averaging 30.9 ppg.

Carter Zimmermann, jr., Kohler​


Zimmermann is averaging a double-double with a team-high 16.6 ppg and 10.0 rpg as well. He also has a team-high 1.6 spg.
