With the spring high school sports season finally underway in earnest, The Newport Daily News will be doing something new this spring. Each week, we plan to post a High School Team of the Week poll on our site.
We'll look back at the Newport County high school sports teams performances — as reported by the coaches — and offer the top teams of the past week. From there, it's in your hands. To cast your vote, check out the teams and then find the ballot at the bottom of the page to vote. Voting is open until Friday night. You can vote as many times as you’d like between now and then.
What does the winner receive? Internet clout. The award is designed to be an interactive way for the state’s passionate high school sports communities to show their support for local players. We want schools, teams and players to create social-media campaigns to garner support and try to earn as many votes as possible for their nominees. When a player wins, the whole community does — because it shows which pockets of the state truly support high school sports.

The Patriots, in their third year as a program, are off to an amazing start in Division III. Portsmouth topped Burrillville, 3-0, on Wednesday night. Jack Loper had six aces, two kills, five digs and 27 assists against the Broncos. Sean Wilkey added nine kills and eight digs and John Casey finished with a dozen kills, three blocks and four digs. Two nights later, Portsmouth blanked Pilgrim, 3-0, with Casey leading the way — 19 kills, 4 blocks, one ace and six digs. Loper added five aces, three kills, 28 assists and one dig, and Wilkey had eight kills, 22 digs and one ace.
Evan Agren earned the save on Monday night by striking out two consecutive West Warwick batters to end the game and Garett West had 5 strikeouts to earn the win after allowing just one earned run and three hits through 6 innings. Noah Travers' single broke open a scoreless tie in the sixth inning, as the Islanders edged the Wizards, 2-1.
The Tigers downed St. Raphael/Ponaganset, 6-1, on Monday. In Singles, Christian Wagner, SR/P, beat Nolan Page, 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3; John Mello, Tiv., beat Mateus Longo Sebban, 6-4, 7-5; Benjamin Black, Tiv., beat Jacob Freeborn, 6-1, 6-3; Jenna Del Deo, Tiv., beat Joseph Rekrut Jr., 7-6, (7-3), 6-2. In Doubles, Benjamin Farley & Philip Kenny, Tiv., beat Josh Stockwell & Blake Webster, 6-1, 7-6 (9-7); Samuel Black & Joshua Perry, Tiv., won by forfeit; Kolbe Gallego & Nicholas Monahan, Tiv., won by forfeit.
Barbara Rainey and Mia Ruggieri each hit two home runs as the Patriots' offense dominated in a 20-3 win over the Burrillville-North Smithfield co-op, 20-3, on Friday. Trailing, 2-0, after the top half of the first, Ruggieri got the lead back with a three-run homer. Portsmouth added to the lead thanks to a BNS error and an RBI single by Kylie Boeh. Rainey added to the lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the second. It sparked a rally that saw Tatum Brennan and Boeh both drive in runs with hits before Rainey hit a two-run homer to put the Patriots ahead, 15-2.
The Patriots were paced by Tyler Castergini — 5 goals and 6 ground balls — and got contributions from Robert Mairs (6 goals, 1 assist), Oliver Mellanson (3 goals, 2 assists) and Shane Temple (1 goal, 4 assists) in the 22-3 victory over Chariho on Tuesday. For the host Chargers, Max Marshall scored all his team's goals in the loss.
After seeing a seven-run lead shrink to two, the Islanders' bats responded with a furious charge in the fourth inning to gain the needed separation to top Juanita Sanchez, 14-5, on Friday. Middletown scored seven runs in the first three innings and was cruising to a win until the Cavaliers put together a rally in the fourth to cut the deficit to 7-5. But the Islanders wasted little time in increasing the lead. Charlotte Miller hit an RBI triple, Delaney King ripped a two-run double and Riley Sexton hit a two-run double as well before stealing home to make it 13-5 at the end of the fourth. Sexton finished the game with 11 strikeouts and earned the win.
