- Jerry Jones bought the Dallas Cowboys for $150 million in 1989
- He and his three children are co-owners of the iconic football team
- His daughter, Charlotte Jones, worked in politics before becoming involved with the Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys are a family business for Jerry Jones and his children.
Jerry bought the world-famous football team nearly 40 years ago after previously working in insurance, gas and oil. In the decades since, his children — Stephen Jones, Charlotte Jones and Jerry Jones Jr. — have joined their dad, becoming co-owners of the Texas team.
"Our family is very blessed. We are fortunate to be able to work as a family and be involved in something as exciting as the Dallas Cowboys. My dad has always believed in the family business," Jerry Jr. said in a June 2016 speech, per the Dallas Cowboys website. "It was when he was in college that he and my grandfather started an insurance company in Missouri. Although it was the footing that led to a prosperous business career, he is quick to remind me sometimes as we're walking out to watch a practice, 'Son, this sure beats selling insurance.' "
In June 2026, season 3 of the Netflix docuseries America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleadershit the streamer, featuring Charlotte overseeing everything from auditions to final cuts for the 2025-26 squad.
Here's everything to know about the owners of the Dallas Cowboys: Jerry Jones and his three children.

In 1989, Jerry bought the Dallas Cowboys for $150 million. He made his fortune in oil and gas, but he still had to take out a significant loan from the bank when he bought the team.
“I had danced with the devil to buy the Cowboys, and it was scary,” Jones told Forbes in November 2022. “When I [got the loan], I celebrated because I had all the money back home.”
The team was struggling financially when Jerry became owner, but under his leadership, he has made the Cowboys one of the most profitable teams in sports. By August 2024, the Cowboys had a valuation of $10.1 billion, pulling in an estimated revenue of $1.2 billion and an operating income of $564 million, according to Forbes.
Today, all three of Jerry's children are listed as co-owners of the team on the Cowboys website.

All three of Jerry's children are co-owners of the Cowboys, in addition to their pivotal positions at the Cowboys organization.
Per his bio on the Dallas Cowboys' website, Jerry's older son, Stephen, is the Cowboys' chief operating officer, executive vice president of player personnel and president of AT&T Stadium.
Thanks to his role, Stephen works closely with his father, Jerry — which can lead to disagreements from time to time. “I think Stephen has an engineer's logic,” Jerry told Sports Business Journalin June 2006. “I'm probably a little more aggressive, a little more willing to try and have one and one make three. He's more into making it fit going in. That's a great combination. You don't need two dreamers in the same room. You can get in trouble that way.”
Stephen added, “I can tell you we have disagreements. But at the end of the day we're both running to the phone to catch back up, because neither one of us wants to go to bed thinking we're in a huge fight with the other. It's just a blessing. I get to work with my father, and we both get to do something in sports. It's very unique.”

In addition to also being a co-owner of the team, Jerry's daughter, Charlotte, is also the chief brand officer for the Cowboys. According to her bio on the Cowboys website, for more than 30 years, Charlotte has "overseen all business operations, strategies and applications surrounding the team's brand as it is presented to fans worldwide."
In September 2021, Charlotte told NFL.com that she never pictured herself "in the world of sports."
"I went into politics, moved to Washington, D.C., and was working there when my dad had this harebrained idea of buying the Dallas Cowboys," she explained. "It was the only time my dad has underestimated anything he ever told us. He said at that time, 'You know, if we do this, this just may change our life a little.' "
During season 3 of America's Sweethearts, fans watched as Charlotte assisted with the final cuts to the 2025-26 cheerleading squad. In particular, she was a fan of Faith Ward, an Aussie who was recruited for the team.
"Every judge has a favorite, and Faith was one of our favorites online, for sure, and then increasingly became a favorite to Charlotte once she got to training camp," director Kelli Finglass said in a confessional. "She understands the big picture, the talent that we need and also some of the other things that could be either media-based, role model-based or brand ambassadors and protectors of the brand."

Jerry's younger son, Jerry Jr., is the chief sales and marketing officer for the Cowboys. He leads the sales and marketing team, but also the club's "vast merchandising business as well as all digital and broadcast media," per the Cowboys website.
In a November 2025 episode of The Gambler podcast, Jerry Jr. said he and his siblings "had no idea what we were about to jump into" when their father purchased the team more than 30 years ago.
"Has it changed our lives? For sure it's changed our lives, but it's gave us a great opportunity to be involved with something so exciting as the Dallas Cowboys," he said. "[We] work together, but also commit our lives to it."
