The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have done an excellent job of staying competitive while preparing for the future, and one national outlet believes they've already found the player who will lead the franchise into its next era.
Bleacher Report recently named wide receiver Emeka Egbuka as Tampa Bay's top building block entering the 2026 season, a nod to the tremendous potential the former first-round pick possesses after an impressive rookie season in which he broke multiple records.
Despite dealing with both hamstring and groin injuries throughout parts of his first NFL season, Egbuka still flashed exactly why the Buccaneers invested a first-round selection in him. He finished his rookie year with 938 receiving yards and six touchdowns while showcasing polished route running, dependable hands and the versatility to line up all over the formation. While his production slowed during the second half of the season, injuries played a role in that decline. Tampa Bay also dealt with a makeshift offensive line for stretches of the year, forcing multiple starters to move around and making life more difficult for the offense as a whole. Even with those obstacles, Egbuka still looked every bit like a future Number 1 receiver.
Now, the opportunity in front of him is even bigger. Following Mike Evans' departure in free agency, Egbuka is expected to take on a much larger role in Baker Mayfield's passing attack in 2026. Chris Godwin Jr remains one of the league's most reliable veterans, but Egbuka has the talent to become the offense's featured playmaker for years to come.
The Buccaneers have consistently tried to avoid rebuilding by developing young stars before veteran leaders move on, and Egbuka appears to be the latest example of that philosophy paying off. At just 23 years old, he already looks capable of becoming one of the NFL's premier young receivers. If he can stay healthy throughout the 2026 season, a breakout campaign could be on the horizon. Reaching his first 1,000-yard season feels like a realistic expectation, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him emerge as one of the league's rising stars.
