Wyndham Clark holds a six-stroke lead at the top of the U.S. Open leaderboard entering the final round Sunday. Just below him is a four-way tie between a few golfers fans may have heard of (Scottie Scheffler, Tom Kim, Sahith Theegala) -- and one they might not know.

His name is Sam Stevens.

If Scheffler is the biggest perceived threat to walk down Clark, with the career Grand Slam in sight, Stevens is probably the player people least expected to be in striking distance after entering the tournament with the longest odds to win it of the bunch. Now that he's played his way into the top five, it's time to get to know the 29-year-old a little better.

Where is Sam Stevens from?

Stevens is from Wichita, Kansas, where he graduated from Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic, the same high school as three-time PGA Tour winner Grier Jones.

He won the Kansas Amateur Championship in 2015, becoming the third generation of his family to win it after his father, Charlie, won in 2010, and his grandfather, Johnny, won in 1960 and 1961. Johnny made 30 PGA starts in the 1960s and Charlie made two starts on the Korn Ferry Tour in 1992. Stevens' mom, Pam, played collegiate tennis at Oklahoma.

Stevens went to Oklahoma State and turned pro in 2018. Ranked No. 60 in the 2026 FedEx Cup standings, he's still seeking his first win on tour after two top-10 finishes this season.
