Who’s playing who in the World Cup round of 32? Who can still make it?

Several more teams sealed their spots in the last 32 of the World Cup by Friday morning, as the race to escape the group stage approaches its climax.

Ecuador came from behind to shock 2014 winners Germany and snatch the victory needed to progress, while Australia confirmed their place in a draw with Paraguay and the same result saw Japan and Sweden both qualify.

With 14 of the 32 spots in the first stage of the knockouts now filled up, which teams have already had their next opponents confirmed and who can the others expect to face next week?

Confirmed round of 32 fixtures

First up to battle for a place in the round of 16 are co-hosts Canada, who finished second in Group A behind Switzerland and face South Africa after they mounted quite the recovery since losing 3-0 and two players to dismissals against Mexico.

Hugo Broos’ side beat South Korea 1-0 on Thursday in their final chance to reach the knockouts, and face another stern test in Jesse Marsch’s team that were going from strength to strength before the Swiss beat them 2-1.

They weren’t the only host nation to end the group campaign on a loss as the United States conceded a 98th-minute tap in against Turkiye, with their meeting with Bosnia and Herzegovina already determined.

The two most enticing fixtures of the round are easily Brazil vs Japan, both of whom are unbeaten and looking sharp under astute tacticians Carlo Ancelotti and Hajime Moriyasu respectively, and the Netherlands vs Morocco.

Morocco finished level on points with Selecao in Group C and the Dutch have been scoring goals for fun, tied on 10 goals with joint-top scorers Germany after dismantling Sweden 5-1 and putting four past sorry Tunisia.

Teams waiting to learn their opponents

Mexico enjoyed a 100% record in Group A and are one of the teams to beat at this tournament so far, as are the Germans who finished top of Group E with the Ivory Coast – all of those sides are still waiting to have their clashes confirmed.

Argentina, Australia, and Switzerland are the final three teams still without opponents for the round of 32, but all will be decided over the next two days depending on who is able to pick up points at the final time of asking.

Who can still qualify?

Scotland’s chances of reaching the last 32 were left hanging by a threat after a truly torrid time against Brazil, gifting Vinícius Júnior an easy brace before Matheus Cunha made it 3-0 on Thursday night.

Steve Clark’s side currently sit eighth in the third-placed teams table and could still squeeze their way into the next round, but have seen their 42% chance run down to a just 5.26% over the past 24 hours.

For them to make it, the following conditions must be met.

  • Senegal must not beat Iraq (Friday, Group I)
  • Iraq must not beat Senegal by two goals or more (Friday, Group I)
  • Uruguay must lose to Spain (Friday, Group H)
  • Iran must lose to Egypt (Friday, Group G)
  • Croatia must lose to Ghana by at least three goals (Saturday, Group L)
  • DR Congo must draw with Uzbekistan, or Uzbekistan win by no more than three goals (Saturday, Group K)
  • Algeria must lose to Austria by at least two goals, or win by at least four (Saturday, Group J

All of Egypt, Iran, Belgium, and New Zealand could still make it out of Group G, making it one of the two contests to keep your eye on over the weekend.

The other is Group H, involving Spain, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, and debutants Cape Verde, who will hope they can add to what’s been a phenomenal start to their first ever World Cup – holding both Spain and Uruguay to entertaining draws.

Top spot is still up for grabs in Group L, as England look to secure it with a win against Panama while Ghana could also go as high as the summit with a victory over Croatia, but only if the Three Lions fail to win.

Luka Modric’s team could also go top, but must overturn their -1 goal difference and hope England fail to win, as their head-to-head record means that the Three Lions would emerge on top thanks to their 4-2 victory at the start of the group stage.

DR Congo and Uzbekistan will duke it out for third place in Group J. Reaching the round of 32 would be a fantastic achievement for either side, partaking in just their second World Cup since 1974 and having made their debut respectively.
