The Chicago White Sox have cut ties with a former All-Star outfielder.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported Wednesday that the AL Central club has designated Austin Hays for assignment.
"White Sox are planning to place outfielder Austin Hays on release waivers. Missed most of the season due to injury, but was scheduled to be activated from rehab," Heyman wrote on X. "Could be an interesting right-handed bat for a team that missed out before deadline."
Hays missed multiple months with a calf strain and just finished a rehab assignment.
He made it into just 12 games with Chicago before the injury. In 44 trips to the plate, Hays slashed .233/.250/.326 with one home run and seven RBIs.
The White Sox agreed to a one-year, $6 million contract with Hays during the offseason, but his current fit on the roster became unclear after Chicago's two outfield additions during his absence.

Shortly after Hays went down, Randal Grichuk signed with the White Sox, and he's hit nine homers in 138 plate appearances.
Center fielder Brenton Doyle was acquired before the deadline from the Colorado Rockies, another right-handed hitter.
Several clubs missed out on adding a right-handed bat at the deadline. Hays is a nine-year veteran and had some solid offensive seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, including an All-Star campaign in 2023 when he hit 16 home runs with a .769 OPS.
