The top talent of the National Women's Soccer League is coming to Columbus when the Kansas City Current take on NY/NJ Gotham FC in the NWSL Challenge Cup on June 26.
The game will feature the league's two major trophy winners from last season at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field, the future home stadium of the NWSL Columbus team. The Current won the NWSL Shield by finishing with the league's best record in the regular season (21-3-2). Gotham won its second consecutive NWSL Championship by defeating the Washington Spirit 1-0 in the final.
This season, Gotham FC is fifth in the league with a 6-2-3 record. The Current and Gotham are tied in points at 21, but the Current have one more game played with a 7-5-0 record and sit in sixth place. Both teams are four points behind the league-leading San Diego Wave.
Gotham FC's roster features Cincinnati native Rose Lavelle, a member of the USWNT and the 2025 NWSL Championship Most Valuable Player. On the other side is Current forward Temwa Chawinga, the NWSL's back-to-back Most Valuable Player and Golden Boot winner, an award given to the season's top goal scorer.
Columbus has seen a wave of NWSL developments since the Challenge Cup game was announced in January, including the April 21 announcement of a Columbus franchise.
The Challenge Cup will be 8 p.m. on June 26 at the ScottsMiracle-Gro arena, home of the MLS Columbus Crew and the future NWSL franchise in Columbus in 2028.
The NWSL Challenge Cup will be available to watch on Prime Video, which is available with an Amazon Prime subscription, which costs $14.99 a month. There is a 30-day free trial available with new subscriptions.
