In his most recent Mock Draft, ESPN analyst Mel Kiper had Clemson Right Tackle Blake Miller being selected 27th overall by the San Francisco 49ers. Let's break down the fit.

This past season, San Francisco managed to go 12-5, finishing 3rd in a stacked NFC West. They were able to carve out a successful season despite copious injuries, something that's plagued the 49ers for the past few seasons. Their season came to an end in a 41-6 divisional round loss to the eventual Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks.

The 49ers were the 4th least sacked team last season, and were 2nd in the NFL in time to throw. That's in large part due to Left Tackle Trent Williams, who is the best tackle in the NFL, and also 37 years old. The Niners need to begin this next generation of pass protectors, and Blake Miller could be a perfect option.

Kiper made it clear that Miller was not an exact replacement for Williams; "You probably see an offensive tackle to San Francisco and think 'Trent Williams heir apparent." But Miller actually played 97% of his college snaps on the right side. Perhaps he'd transition to left tackle if the Niners can't figure out Williams' contract situation, but I like Miller as an upgrade over Colton McKivitz on the right side regardless of what happens there."

Similar to what the Rams did with replacing Aaron Donald, the best method for moving on from Williams is to replace him in the aggregate. Miller should be a perfect piece for this new era of 49ers offensive linemen, and projects well as a competent day-one starter.
