With the 2026 Winter Olympics drawing to a close, it's time to look at what lies ahead. It was an eventful 17 days, with the United States setting a new record for gold medals won in a winter Games. The American women had a phenomenal games, with figure skater Alysa Liu won the first American gold individual medal since Sarah Hughes in 2002 and 41-year-old Elana Meyers Taylor taking home her first gold in monobob in five Olympics. The United States also won the gold in women's hockey, with Breezy Johnson (downhill), Elizabeth Lemley (moguls) and Mikaela Shiffrin (slalom) winning on the slopes. On the men's side, Alex Ferreira (halfpipe) and Jordan Stolz (500m, 1000m speed skating) took the gold.
So where do the Olympics head next?
First up, we stay in the United States for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. It's the first time the U.S. has hosted the summer Games since 1996 in Atlanta. In 2030, the Winter Olympics stay in Europe and head to the French Alps.
The 2026 Closing Ceremonies kick off at 2:30 p.m. ET on NBC and streaming on Peacock. They'll be hosted by the trio of Terry Gannon, Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir.
