As the Milano Cortino 2026 Winter Olympics draw to a close, another set of elite athletes is preparing for the competition of a lifetime.
The 2026 Winter Paralympics will open in early March, with more than 600 para athletes competing across six sports and 79 medal events.
Originating from a 1984 event at the Opening Ceremony of the London 1948 Olympic Games, the modern Paralympics began as a brief opportunity for 16 injured servicemen and women to participate in an elite archery event, according to the International Paralympic Committee. The first official Paralympic Games took place in Rome, Italy, in 1960, and featured 400 athletes from 23 countries.

The 2026 Paralympics officially begin March 6 and end March 15.
The opening ceremony will take place at the Verona Olympic Arena on March 6, with NBC live streaming the event beginning at 1:30 p.m. ET.
Like the 2026 Winter Olympics, the 2026 Winter Paralympics will take place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
The six sports represented at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Paralympics are:
NBC and its affiliates own the broadcasting rights to the Olympics this year. NBC, USA Network, and CNBC will offer live TV coverage, while live and on-demand streaming will be available through Peacock.
Peacock and USA Network will air live coverage of the opening ceremony at 2 p.m. ET, with pre-show coverage beginning at 1:30 p.m. NBC and Peacock will air primetime highlight shows on March 7 and March 14 at 8 p.m. ET.
NBC, USA Network and CNBC will air 80 hours of programming, including a record eight hours on the main NBC channel. NBC Sports Digital will stream more than 270 hours, while Peacock will offer coverage of every event.
NBC's Paralympics coverage will culminate in live coverage of the sled hockey gold medal game on Sunday, March 15, at 11:05 a.m. ET, with the U.S. potentially going for its fifth consecutive gold medal.
