Matthew Stafford is the 2025 AP NFL MVP award winner, but it was far from unanimous. The Los Angeles Rams quarterback edged New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye by one vote to win the prestigious annual award on Thursday.

Stafford earned 24 votes, while Maye received 23 votes. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen got two votes, and Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, who wasn't even a finalist, inexplicably received one vote.

It was the closest race since Pro Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning and Steve McNair were co-winners of the award in 2003.

Maye finished the season with 4,394 passing yards, 31 touchdowns and eight interceptions, while Stafford racked up 4,707 passing yards, 46 touchdowns and eight interceptions. It was a close race that came down to the wire, as most expected.

NFL MVP voting:

Matthew Stafford: 24
Drake Maye: 23
Josh Allen: 2
Justin Herbert: 1

Maye will have the opportunity to come away with the bigger award of the two on Sunday, if the Patriots can defeat the Seattle Seahawks at Super Bowl LX. A Lombardi Trophy would go a long way in healing any disappointment that comes from the NFL Honors.

One way to prove naysayers wrong is by doing the one thing Stafford couldn't do: Beat the Seahawks in the playoffs.
