If there's any silver lining to another disappointing season from the Detroit Red Wings, it's that the team still has a small chance at landing a high draft pick.
With one game left to play in the regular season, the Red Wings currently sit in sixth place in the Atlantic Division, well out of reach of the playoffs. But that also currently slots them in the 12th position in the pre-lottery draft order, giving them a chance at the second overall draft pick should they win the lottery.
The 2025 NHL Draft is scheduled to begin on Friday, June 27 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The draft lottery is expected to take place at some point in May, though the scheduled time has yet to be released.
Here's what we know about the the 2025 draft and the Red Wings, led by general manager Steve Yzerman.
Canadian 17-year-old defenseman Matthew Schaefer is the projected top pick, with San Jose Sharks having the top odds (18.5%). He had seven goals and 15 assists in 17 games in the Ontario Hockey League with the Erie Otters.
Canadian 18-year-old center/left winger Michael Misa is projected at No. 2. He put up 62 goals and 72 assists in 65 games for 134 points this season with the Saginaw Spirits in the OHL.
Chicago (13.5% chance to win lottery) and Nashville (11.5%) are locked into their pre-lottery slots at No. 2 and 3 respectively.
No, but they can get really close.
According to the draft website Tankathon.com, the Red Wings currently have a 2.5% chance of winning the draft lottery and a 0% chance of winning the top spot. That's because teams who win the draft lottery can only jump up 10 spots, meaning teams in slots 12-16 (like the Red Wings currently in the 12th slot) can't earn a No. 1 pick through the lottery.
The Red Wings had a shot at the No. 1 pick before Wednesday's win over the New Jersey Devils, but with three points now separating the Red Wings and the New York Islanders (currently in the 10th slot), and with the New York Rangers locked into the 11th slot, Detroit cannot rise in the pre-lottery draft order with only one game left to play.
OPINION: It's popular to fire Steve Yzerman, but Chris Ilitch should give him 1 more season
Still, the Wings could grab the No. 2 overall pick should they win the lottery, though the odds are stacked against them. The Red Wings will get two chances to move up in the draft order during the draft lottery, with their pre-draft position potentially resetting after the first winner is announced.

The Red Wings' first-round pick is currently No. 12, though that can change depending on the outcome of the draft lottery.
Their second-round pick is currently slotted at No. 44. Their third-round picks are slotted at No. 75 and No. 76 overall, with the first of those two coming courtesy of the Utah Hockey Club in a 2024 trade for Olli Määttä (with that pick originally coming from the Rangers).
The Red Wings traded Robby Fabbri and their original fourth-round pick to the Anaheim Ducks for Gage Alexander on July 3, but they picked up another fourth-round pick in a three-team trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning and Seattle Kraken on March 5.
The Wings have an extra seventh-round pick, No. 212 overall, acquired via a 2023 trade of Jakub Vrana with the St. Louis Blues.
