Matthew Golden may not be returning kicks for the Green Bay Packers, but he's invoking a "Special Team" with his jersey-number assignment. And you'll love the real-time reaction of a former Packers player who once wore it.
The Packers have bestowed No. 81 to the first-round draft pick, a number most famously worn by Super Bowl XXXI MVP Desmond Howard, who's on hand at the NFL draft in Green Bay as a media analyst on ABC, part of the "College Gameday" booth.
Howard, as it happens, was relaying his recollections of that game when his fellow analysts alerted him to "breaking news" that the Packers had posted to social media the number.
"Oh wow, that's a good thing," Howard said. "I approve of that."
Golden, who wore No. 2 in college at Texas (a jersey currently belonging to backup quarterback Malik Willis), became the first wide receiver selected in the first round by Green Bay since Javon Walker in 2002.
Josiah Deguara wore the jersey between 2020 and 2023, but there there's a chance here for Golden to really make the number his own. Though return virtuoso Howard made a name for himself with the digits, the other highest-profile Packers to wear the number include Geronimo Allison, Andrew Quarless, Perry Kemp and Packers Hall of Famer Marv Fleming.
The Packers Pro Shop doesn't yet have any listings for No. 81 jerseys, but you can buy a No. 1 jersey, reflective of his status as the first-round pick, for $129.99.
