In Mexico, NBA basketball is among the fastest-growing sports in terms of viewership, with fans enjoying the G League squad, the Capitanes, based in the national capital, as well as the annual NBA Mexico Game held in Mexico City Arena.

It is also a country with ancient cultural roots (including their own version of a ball game where a hoop features prominently). Mexico is coming into its own on the global stage amid a modern, vibrant milieu, sharing its profound cultural wealth while enjoying the best of what the world (and the NBA) has to offer. Mexico City, in particular, has been the epicenter of that cultural exchange, as it has been for over seven centuries.

Founded in part as a place for people of different nations to come and trade in goods and ideas, the city today serves as the same as visitors from around the globe experience the best of what Mexico has to offer while all enjoy the spectacle and pomp of sporting events like the NBA Mexico games.

Changing times, changing tastes

As the expectations of tourists visiting the country and its capital, Mexico City, change to focus more on immersive experiences that allow visitors to get a more tangible understanding of the people and cultures they are surrounded by grows, the NBA has adapted as well. Using their "Global Games" program to unite the NBA experience as it is celebrated in Mexico with the contexts in which they are being received by tourists and locals alike to create deeper engagement, the league has put together a novel approach to enjoying the NBA and local culture alike.

And as an NBA journalist with their own roots writing about culture in the region and how it connects to the wider world via tourism and trade as an anthropologist, I found myself fascinated by this new direction for the league and NBA Mexico. To that end, Rookie Wire linked up with the folks putting together the "House of Legends" experience crafted by the NBA to meet those changing expectations -- and frankly wound up impressed with the degree of detail and thoughtfulness being put into the event.

Let's take a closer look at what the crew behind the "House of Legends" NBA Experience had to say about this year's event, what goes into it, and why we should consider participating (this interview has been lightly edited for brevity and clarity).

So let's start at the beginning. What is the origin story for NBA Experiences, and specifically the "House of Legends" event you all are putting together?

NBA Experiences launched in 2022 through a partnership between the NBA and Charlotte-based Quint, the league’s Official Experiences Provider. Delivering curated on- and off-court programming, NBA Experiences creates customized fan opportunities at marquee events like NBA All-Star, NBA Draft, NBA Summer League, and NBA Global Games.

This marks the third consecutive year in Mexico, highlighted by the debut of House of Legends—an elevated out-of-arena activation hosted inside Mexico City’s most exclusive private club. The night before the Detroit Pistons and Dallas Mavericks tip off, guests will step into a celebration that blends the energy of the NBA with Mexico’s rich traditions.

How would one sign up to participate in this event as a fan of the league in town for the weekend of the Mexico City Game?

Fans can purchase packages HERE (https://nbaexperiences.com/nba-mexico-city-game-2025). House of Legends is included in the Hall of Fame and MVP packages or can be purchased separately as an add-on HERE.

Is the impetus behind the wider NBA Experiences concept tied to any emerging trends in tourism more generally?

Absolutely. The broader NBA Experiences platform is closely tied to shifts we’re seeing across live entertainment and tourism. Fans today want more than a ticket—they’re looking for immersive, memorable touchpoints that add value to their trip.

NBA Experiences was built to meet that demand, combining world-class basketball with premium hospitality, behind-the-scenes access, and cultural tie-ins unique to each host city. That’s the trend driving fan loyalty, and it’s exactly what shaped our Mexico City activations and the larger vision for NBA Experiences moving forward.

Do you anticipate this to become a permanent part of the Global Games? Will this be included for games in Europe, Abu Dhabi, and other events?

Yes – we’re positioning this as a marquee event within our activations.

"House of Legends", presented by NBA Experiences and featuring top NBA Legends, will anchor our global presence—launching in Mexico City, then continuing in Berlin, London, and beyond.

I see you've embraced the Día de los Muertos theme as a major part of the event. How are you planning on doing so?

We’ve designed the Día de los Muertos elements with respect and authenticity. Guests will experience cultural performances, including folk dancers and live music, alongside decor and event elements inspired by the holiday.

Tequila tastings and a curated menu complement the celebration, providing a memorable experience in a relaxed, intimate environment.

Much of what we see of Día de los Muertos is spectacular by definition. But it is also a deeply personal day in which we celebrate the lives of lost loved ones, and how they live on through remembrance. I'm curious to hear how the experience will share this amazing cultural phenomena with your guests.

The Día de los Muertos-themed program is built to balance authenticity with celebration. Performances and storytelling are crafted to be visually engaging while also reflecting the holiday’s deeper meaning of remembrance and celebration.

Guests will enjoy more than entertainment—they’ll gain a meaningful introduction to the tradition, particularly for international fans, all while mingling with NBA legends sharing the experience. Hosting the event in an exclusive private club allows us to honor the holiday thoughtfully in a relaxed, intimate, yet lively setting.

Tell me more about the venue for House of Legends. Why is it special? What can fans expect to see there?

The event takes place inside one of Mexico City’s most exclusive private clubs — a venue that carries both prestige and history. It’s a setting that perfectly blends elegance with intimacy, giving fans a chance to connect directly with NBA Legends in a way that simply doesn’t happen at an arena.

Guests can expect polished surroundings, premium hospitality, and a stage set for rare encounters with basketball greats.

Mexico City is not far removed from its 700th anniversary, and its history is filled with legends from Moctezuma and Cortéz to Zapata, Kahlo, and Cárdenas, to name just a few. How does one choose how to represent NBA legends alongside such an iconic backdrop?

The NBA brings its own set of legends whose impact extends beyond the court. House of Legends creates a space where fans can connect with these figures while enjoying an immersive evening in Mexico City.

The experience is designed to honor the city’s vibrant culture through branding, decor, and curated activities—without attempting to directly merge NBA stories with local historical figures—allowing both the sport and the city’s culture to shine authentically.

The city is also renowned as a culinary hotspot -- and not just for its deep roots in Mesoamerican foodways. With globally recognized restaurants like Pujol and Quintonil, the bar will be high in terms of expectations. What can fans enjoying the House of Legends experience expect in terms of cuisine?

Guests can expect a tasting menu that highlights the flavors and diversity of Mexican cuisine, appealing to a global audience familiar with Mexico City’s reputation as a culinary capital.

Each course is designed to reflect local traditions while offering a premium, approachable dining experience. Specialty dishes and cocktails are thoughtfully prepared to complement the celebratory atmosphere of the event.

I've also been told there will be cocktails inspired by local traditions. Can you tell me anything about them?

In addition to a premium open bar, guests will enjoy tequila tastings inspired by Día de los Muertos traditions.

These offerings provide a cultural touchpoint for the event, created with trusted vendors to ensure authenticity and a genuine connection to Mexico City’s heritage, rather than imitated.

Can you give us any details on the NBA legends who will be present? What about the live entertainment?

This year’s featured guest is NBA Champion and four-time All-Star Shawn Marion, alongside other league legends like José Calderón. Guests will have the unique chance to hear their stories firsthand, engage in conversation, and connect with retired players and figures closely tied to the NBA.

Live Mexican-inspired performances, curated with respected artists and vendors, will highlight local culture, with additional entertainment seamlessly integrated throughout the evening.

Would you say this event is more of an ambassador of the sport, or to attract a new sort of fan, both, or other things as well?

Both. House of Legends honors basketball’s history in Mexico City while also reaching new fans through culturally rich experiences.

It deepens engagement with longtime supporters and invites fresh audiences by offering an experience that extends well beyond the game itself.

Is there anything else I should know about the event or the people putting it together?

This is the third year NBA Experiences has operated in Mexico, but it marks the debut of House of Legends. The concept reflects a broader vision to make NBA activations more immersive and culturally connected — with plans to expand in Berlin, London, and other global cities, alongside continued growth at domestic events like NBA Cup, Summer League, NBA Draft, and NBA All-Star.

The goal is to reach not only dedicated basketball fans but also audiences drawn to cultural, lifestyle, and entertainment experiences that extend beyond the court.

In Mexico City, that ranges from NBA Legend shootarounds and on-court photos to crossover offerings like Formula 1 Mexico + NBA Mexico, with packages designed for every type of fan — from upper-level seats to courtside access.
