The San Francisco 49ers finally checked off the biggest item on their offseason to-do list when they agreed to a long-term contract extension with quarterback Brock Purdy.

Purdy's future with the club was a sizable question mark that hung over everything the club did during the offseason. With that contract done, it leaves us to wonder what's next for San Francisco?

There are two ways to look at the club's future moving forward.

In the immediate there aren't any pressing things to address outside the 90-man roster. They'll make some tweaks here and there, but at this stage of the offseason there isn't going to be a major free agent addition to fill gaps on the 49ers' roster. They could use more depth at defensive end and a handful of other positions. Those spots aren't something they necessarily need to address right away, though.

Then there's a bigger picture view where the team can now start maneuvering contracts around Purdy knowing what the structure of his deal is and his long-term impact on their salary cap.

One item they'll be aiming to check off is an extension for linebacker Fred Warner. NBC Sports Bay Area's Jennifer Lee Chan on Sunday reported the 49ers and Warner are close on a new deal. The four-time All-Pro has no guaranteed money left on his deal, which is up after the 2026 season.

It makes sense they'd be aiming to keep the 28-year-old around beyond the next couple of seasons. He's still playing at a high level and keeping players like Warner in the building is why they've spent this offseason resetting their salary cap by unloading some of their more cumbersome contracts.

With Purdy now locked in through the 2030 season, the 49ers can now begin locking up the rest of the core that will conceivably be part of a new Super Bowl window. It'll be interesting to see who else besides Warner gets a new deal.

There are no players on the offensive line with big-money extensions due in the next couple of seasons. Cornerback Deommodore Lenoir and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk signed extensions last year. So did running back Christian McCaffrey and left tackle Trent Williams.

Once Warner's deal is done, it may be awhile before the 49ers hand out another top-of-market deal to a home-grown talent. That's not necessarily good news and it's an indication of the lack of star-quality talent from the 49ers' 2022 and 2023 draft classes.

Instead, they'll have some flexibility to look outside the building for reinforcements who can help bolster the roster around their franchise QB.
