Present circumstances notwithstanding, the Packers’ backup running back situation was already a bit of a mystery.

Chris Brooks has been useful, but has never played a particularly big role. 2024 third round pick MarShawn Lloyd had hurt about every body part you can imagine. It’s spare parts and undrafted free agent types beyond that.

That’s not great for a team that views itself as a Super Bowl contender. Sooner or later, they’re going to need contributions from a non-Josh Jacobs running back. Jacobs didn’t make it through 2025 healthy. Betting on him doing that in 2026, when he’s a year older and has always run with very little regard for his own health and safety, seems foolish. And that’s before we even get to a potential suspension, if the wheels of what the NFL calls justice move that quickly.

All that to say Brian Gutekunst might be waking up with an unexpected tension headache this morning. It’s not like the position was stable, anyway, but things are even more tenuous at running back now.
