Webb City pitchers Beckett Cowan and Chipper Hunt combined for a no-hitter as the Webb City 12-and-under All-Stars captured the Missouri District 2 Little League championship with a 7-2 win over Springfield on Friday night at Sunny Jim Park in Joplin.
Cowan gave up two runs on no hits while striking out nine and walking four in 4 1/3 innings and Hunt gave up no runs and no hits while striking out two in 1 2/3 innings to send Webb City to the 12-and-under Little League state championship later this week at Columbia.
Webb City will vie for its fifth state title and a trip to Whitestown, Indiana, for the Little League Central Region tournament and a possible trip to the Little League World Series.
Webb went into Friday’s championship against Springfield having already beaten Springfield 16-4 Monday in their tournament opener, but Springfield forced a decisive third game with a 12-9 win in the first game Friday.
In Game 1 Friday, Webb City held a 3-2 lead after the first two frames, but Springfield battled back to tie the game at 7 after the third inning. Springfield plated four runs in the top of the fifth to take its first lead of the game at 11-7. Webb City scored twice in the bottom of the frame to trim the lead to 11-9 but eventually fell 12-9 to force a third game between the two teams in the double-elimination tourney.
Kavyn Holland was perfect at the plate for Webb City in the first game, finishing 3 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs. Cowan was 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs and Dylan Bennett went 2 for 3 with a run.
“I told them that coming from Webb City, every team is going to give us their best,” Webb City coach Matt Peak said. “I told them we have to be prepared. Our boys are tough, and they battled through. They fought back. There’s a lot of character on this team. I’m really proud of them.”
Webb City jumped on Springfield early in the final game Friday, plating six runs in the bottom of the first.
After that, pitching and defense took over until the top of the fourth, when Springfield put up a pair of runs on a wild pitch and a passed ball.
Webb City scored its final run in the bottom of the fifth when Kase Peak scored from third on a dropped third strike to make it a 7-2 game.
Beckett went 1 for 2 with a run and two RBIs, Hunt and Brodie Henson both finished 1 for 2 with a run and an RBI each, and Peak was 1 for 3 with a run.
“They are great teammates,” Beckett said. “And we have a lot of depth. We have 12 really good hitters.”
Beckett also talked about the keys to success moving forward.
“We just need to put the ball in play and have decent pitching,” he said.
First baseman Andrew Durman also shared what its like playing with this team.
“We are a good group of kids,” he said. “We’re good at baseball, we know how to work together as a team and we all have a lot of fun.”

“There’s some pressure, because you don’t want to go down in history as the one that loses,” Durman said.
