The United States men's national team is set to play its most important match in decades when it faces Belgium in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup.
With a victory, the USA can advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since the 2002 World Cup. It would also give the USMNT a measure of revenge against Belgium, which knocked it out in the round of 16 of the 2014 World Cup in a 2-1 extra time victory for the Red Devils.
Additionally, a victory would mark an improvement over the USMNT's finish at the 1994 World Cup, the only other World Cup held in the United States. In that tournament, the Americans made the knockout stage but exited in the round of 16 after a 1-0 loss to the eventual tournament champions, Brazil.
That said, a loss would mark a disappointing end to what has otherwise been a very positive tournament. It would also ensure that the three host nations for the 2026 World Cup – Canada, Mexico and the United States – would all be eliminated.
With all of that in mind, supporters of the Stars and Stripes will be showing up in full force for the match against the Red Devils. Belgium will have its own contingent of fans represented at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington, which should make for a raucous crowd on hand for the round of 16 match.
