Warriors' G League standout earns praise following career night

Malevy Leon, 26, has been a bright spot in the Santa Cruz Warriors' season, leading to him signing a two-way contract with the Golden State Warriors in December. However, coming into Wednesday's game against the Memphis Grizzlies, Leons had only suited up for 10 total NBA games, five for the Warriors and six last season for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Despite his lack of experience at the NBA level, Leons made a sizeable impact for Steve Kerr's team. He ended the night with 9 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals, shooting 3-of-5 from the field. When speaking with the media after the game, Kerr was full of praise for the impact Leons made in his 17 minutes of playing time.

“A really good night for everybody who stepped on the floor, you know, missing so many guys. Thought Malevy was awesome," Kerr said. "The energy, defending without fouling, you know, creating some problems for them at the defensive end of the floor, and then making some nice plays on offense as well. It was fun to watch him.”

Leons, 26, has suited up for Santa Cruz on 17 occasions this season, averaging 13.8 points and 7.1 rebounds. His production against the Grizzlies could earn him some additional playing time as Golden State navigates its current injury issues.

While Leons' path to consistent playing time looks limited this season, he can look toward Gui Santos for proof that excelling in the G-League and making the most of his minutes with the Warriors could potentially lead to a full-scale contract further down the line.
