The 2026 Wake Forest Baseball season officially got underway last weekend, with Wake Forest going 2-1 in the 2026 Puerto Rico Challenge. The Deacs dropped their opening game against Houston, but bounced back to beat both Washington and Indiana State.

The season got off to a tough start on Friday morning with an 8-2 loss to the Houston Cougars. The game took a turn for the worse in the bottom of the 3rd inning, when a an errant throw allowed the Cougs to get on the board first and grab a 2-0 lead.

A wild pitch from Blake Morningstar would bring in a 3rd run, and an Antonelli Savattere RBI single gave Houston a 4-0 lead at the end of the 3rd inning. The Houston lead would grow as high as 6-0 before the Deacs got on the scoreboard in the 6th inning. A Dalton Wentz RBI double and an Andrew Costello RBI single in the 6th cut the lead down to 6-2, but that would be all the scoring Wake was able to muster in their first game of the season.

On Saturday, the Deacs got back in the win column with a 5-0 shutout win over the Washington Huskies. The Deacs finished the game with 20 strikeouts—their second most since 1999—and allowed just 4 hits. A Jimmy Keenan double with the bases loaded in the 2nd inning gave Wake a 2-0 lead, and the Deacs would score 2 more runs in the inning to take a commanding 4-0 lead.

Freshman JD Stein added an RBI double in the 6th inning, and the Deacs went on to win 5-0.

In the final game of the Puerto Rico Challenge, Wake Forest dismantled the Indiana State Sycamores 10-1. Indiana State got on the board first with an RBI double in the 1st inning, and from that point on it was all Deacs. A Jackson Miller 2 RBI single in the 2nd inning got things started for Wake to take a 2-0 lead, and Wake just kept pouring it on. The highlight of the game was Kade Lewis’s 2 run homer—Wake’s first home run of the season—in the 3rd inning to give the Deacs a 5-1 lead.

Led by Jackson Miller, who finished the game with 2 hits and 3 RBI’s, the Deacs closed out Puerto Rico with 10 hits and 9 RBI’s to blow out the Sycamore 10-1. Matthew Dallas and Duncan Marsten were lights out on the mound, as the duo combined for 13 strikeouts in 8 innings pitched to keep Indiana State at just 1 run for the game.

With 1 loss to Houston, the Deacs dropped just 1 spot in the Top 25 to #22 in the nation.

Wake Forest will have their home opener tomorrow against High Point at 4 PM at the Couch.

Go Deacs!
