This is a different sort of poll from the ones we’ve posted earlier in the baseball season. In fact, it's three separate polls.

You’ve certainly helped contribute to it by submitting scores and game reports since the end of March. There will still be open voting to determine the result, with the polls closing Saturday, at 11:59 p.m.

It’s time to open the door for a Most Valuable Player conversation in Division I, Division II and Division III. This will have nothing to do with Player of the Year and All-State selections – both will be announced at a later date. We also have no affiliation with the Gatorade version of those honors.

Bishop Hendricken, East Greenwich and Woonsocket carried the top seeds into their respective playoff fields. That pretty much mandates they’ll each have a nominee here. The best teams, by definition, have the best players.

The full picture isn’t painted yet. The last couple weeks of playoff action are like final exams in high school and college – not the complete weight for your grade, but certainly a healthy portion of it. There will be an additional poll after the action at Rhode Island College to determine who shined brightest with championships on the line.

That’s enough of a preamble. It’s time for the nominees from each division (in alphabetical order).

Meet the nominees for Longplex MVP for Baseball

⚾Division I

Brady Collins, La Salle

There isn’t a more impactful two-way player in the state in terms of offense and defense. Collins offers a consistent spark for the Rams as an extra-base bat, and the Duke commit’s play behind the plate as a catcher might be even more impactful. Opposing teams rarely both to attempt a stolen base and need to be wary of pickoff throws to all three bases.

Max Correiro, East Providence

The Townies feature multiple contenders on their roster – Gavin Palombo, Ben Hallene and JJ Renaud also come to mind. Correiro gets the nod thanks to his team lead in multiple offensive categories and the danger he provides at the heart of the order. He’s also a capable defensive right fielder with a strong throwing arm.

Cullen Crain, Bishop Hendricken

Consider the roles Crain plays for the state’s top team entering the playoffs – shortstop and impact bat atop the lineup. He’s tasked with leading the infield and producing at the plate. Crain does both at an elite level, a skillset that made him a late commitment to Brown.

Will Haggerty, Moses Brown

It’s difficult to imagine the Quakers in the playoffs without Haggerty. He’s their leadoff man in the batting order and tops the roster in hits, runs scored and extra-base hits. Not bad for a secondary skillset – the junior right-hander is committed to Florida as a pitcher and leads his team in innings pitched and strikeouts.

⚾Division II

Nick Andruchow, West Warwick

Andruchow has been dangerous at the plate since the opening innings of the season. His home run in a road victory at defending champion North Providence was the start of a campaign that saw him sit among state leaders in batting, slugging, extra-base hits and more.

Anthony Burt, West Warwick

Two nominees from one team? And from the No. 2 seed, no less? Unique circumstances, yes, but the Wizards have two stars leading them. Burt was behind in his throwing program to start the season, but the St. John’s commit is still the most dominant arm in the division. He’s also produced at the plate after making a switch to hitting left-handed, ranking his team leaders in most key offensive categories.

Cam Carlisle, Middletown

The Islanders leaned heavily on a young star while earning the last of four byes in the playoff field. Carlisle has made an immediate impact as a sophomore, emerging as the top pitcher and hitter on his team. There figures to be much more to come from Carlisle in future seasons – and, potentially, in some key moments this spring.

Miles Doman, East Greenwich

It could be Doman on the mound if the Avengers reach and finally end their string of heartbreak in the best-of-3 finals. Van Martin, Walker Klika and Anders Nelson all deserve a mention here, but Doman has separated himself a bit this season thanks to his durability and his complete skillset as a pitcher, hitter and defender.

⚾Division III

Drake Dumont, Scituate

A powerful running back and linebacker for the Spartans on the football field, Dumont puts that strength and leadership ability to work in the spring on the diamond. He's the top offensive threat in a solid Scituate lineup, capable of extra-base power in every plate appearance.

Noah Ferreira, BVP/Central Falls

The Warrior Pride have a chance to win every time Ferreira takes the mound. He hit the midpoint of the season averaging nearly two strikeouts per inning while frustrating opposing offenses with regularity. Ferreira also reached base in roughly half his plate appearances, a dangerous hitter in his team’s everyday lineup.

Tyler Medeiros, Exeter-West Greenwich

The Scarlet Knights check in as the No. 2 seed in the playoff field and could carry the best chance to spoil Woonsocket’s run at consecutive championships. Medeiros is their top pitcher and adds significant value both as an offensive threat and as a middle infielder on defense.

Patrick Munger, Woonsocket

The Villa Novans were the state’s only unbeaten team during the regular season, and Munger is their top two-way player. The right-hander led them in strikeouts and earned-run average on the mound while doing his part in an offensive attack that scored in double digits at will.
