It's time to vote for The News Leader Athlete of the Week. It may be a few days (or a week or more) before we see high school sports again with snowy and icy roads throughout the area, but we had a full slate of games last week.

The News Leader staff, with input from coaches and fans, nominate the athletes. Then, every Monday, we open the polls and let readers select the top athlete in The News Leader coverage area from the previous week. The poll remains open through Wednesday at noon. The winner is announced on Thursday.

If you have someone to nominate email [email protected] by Sunday night at 9 p.m.

This week's nominees:

Caroline Hanger, Fort Defiance girls basketball

Sophomore Caroline Hanger scored 31 points in a double overtime loss to Staunton Jan. 20 before scoring 34 in a win over Waynesboro Jan. 23.

Anthony Renne, Staunton boys basketball

Senior Anthony Renne helped Staunton to a three-win week, scoring 26 points against Fort Defiance, 13 against Rockbridge County and 24 against William Byrd.

Chesney Dunlap, Riverheads girls basketball

Freshman Chesney Dunlap helped Riverheads to a win over Waynesboro with 21 points Jan. 20. In a loss to Stuarts Draft Jan. 23 Dunlap scored 18 to lead her team.
