The UTEP women's basketball team didn't have a lot of room for error against defending Conference USA champion Liberty, and what room there was was spent entirely in the opening seven minutes of a 86-66 loss where the Miners dug a hole they spent all game chasing.
Down 15-2 in the first quarter, UTEP played decently the rest of the way but it was too much to overcome against a team as good as Liberty as the Miners fell to 9-4 overall, 1-1 in CUSA. Liberty went to 8-5, 2-0.

Portia Adams led UTEP with 17 points and the Miners made 22-of-24 free throws, but couldn't consistently get stops. Liberty shot 48% from the floor and made 12-of-24 3-pointers, with many of those answering what pushes UTEP could assemble in a comeback attempt. The Miners never got closer than seven after their early troubles and was down double figures almost the entire second half.
Heaven Samoya-Mathis and Mary Moses Amaniyo each scored 14 off the bench, as the Miners won bench points 28-9.
UTEP had an abysmal start which it partially played its way out of en route to a 38-30 halftime deficit.
The Miners made one of their first 10 shots and had five turnovers as Liberty jumped out to a 15-2 lead inside the final 2:30 of the first quarter. UTEP then scored on 12 of its next 14 possessions, but Liberty kept scoring as well, as the Flames shot 46% in the first half to UTEP's 30%.
