The UTEP football program is a game away from having a player in the Super Bowl.

Former linebacker Tyrice Knight, in his second year with the Seahawks after selected in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft, is a key backup and special teams player for Seattle, who host the Los Angeles Rams at 4:30 p.m. MT/3:30 p.m. PT Sunday in the NFC Championship.

Knight had five tackles in the divisional win over San Francisco, which came after a regular season when he had 57 tackles (37 solo) and two sacks and also nine starts. Knight was listed as questionable in last week's game against San Francisco with a shoulder injury but was cleared before game and was full go.

His most notable game this year was in a win over the Arizona Cardinals when he had those two sacks, both forcing fumbles against Arizona quarterback Jacoby Brissett. Those were both returned for touchdowns by teammate DeMarcus Lawrence.

Knight was taken 118th overall in the 2024 draft after playing four years at UTEP, including the COVID-19 year that didn't count against his eligibility in 2020. He was at Independence Community College in Kansas for two years before that.

In his 2023 senior season, Knight had 140 tackles with 15.5 going for a loss, four and half sacks, seven pass deflections, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble. For his career his numbers were 391 career tackles, ranking him ninth on UTEP's all-time list, 33.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, two interceptions, 17 pass breakups, five force fumbles and four fumble recoveries.

The last UTEP alum to play in a Super Bowl is believed to be Brian Young after the 2009 season, in Super Bowl XLIV, with the New Orleans Saints when they beat the Indianapolis Colts. Young is also an Andress alum.

In 2024 UTEP and Irvin alum Kayla Thornton won a WNBA Championship with the New York Liberty. UTEP and Burges alum Aaron Jones played in the NFC Championship game for the Green Bay Packers in 2019 and '20.
