Uruguay's highly anticipated Group H finale against Spain was supposed to be a heavyweight clash for the top spot. It also marked a match in which Uruguay desperately needed at least a point, if not three, to advance to the knockout phase. However, with Uruguay trailing 1-0 late in the 2026 World Cup match, things quickly escalated during stoppage time when Agustin Canobbio, who had been warned on several occasions, made a severely late tackle.

The tackle drew an immediate red card from the referee, and the aftermath was nothing short of a chaotic scene. Canobbio was seen in the official's face after the card, and shortly after, on the sidelines, he had to be held back for a second time while appearing to shout at the referee.

The aftermath and sideline interaction were not shown on the video above, but Canobbio was involved in another tense moment with Nico Williams and Uruguay teammate Nicolas de la Cruz after a questionable tackle just moments before.

Uruguay's tough loss to Spain and Cape Verde's draw decide Group H

The end result was certainly just part of Uruguay's frustration, which became the highest-ranked country to be sent home before the knockout rounds thus far at the World Cup. Spain's lone goal in the 1-0 victory came on an attempt that the announcers even dubbed as a mistake by the goalkeeper on this shot from Alex Baena.

Although Uruguay began the night level with Cape Verde for second place in Group H, their loss to Spain, paired with Cape Verde's 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia, meant Uruguay's World Cup was over. It also secured second place in the group for Cape Verde, which finished with three points after drawing each of its three games.
