France is on a short list of favorites to win the 2026 World Cup, but Les Bleus will have to first advance out of what many experts believe is the toughest four-team group in the entire tournament.

France − the champions from 2018 and finalists from 2022 − headline Group I, along with Norway, Senegal and Iraq.

There's plenty of star power to go around with 2022 Golden Boot winner Kylian Mbappe and Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele leading France, goal-scoring sensation Erling Haaland starring for Norway and Senegal's squad featuring the electric Sadio Mane.

Each of the Group I teams already have a match under their belts. Here's how the standings are shaping up, as the teams prepare for their games on Monday, June 22:

World Cup Group I standings​


Here's how the Group I standings look after one match (goal differential in parentheses):

  • Norway 1-0-0 (+3) – 3 points
  • France 1-0-0 (+2) – 3 points
  • Senegal 0-0-1 (-2) – 0 points
  • Iraq 0-0-1 (-3) – 0 points

Group I results results​


France and Norway both won their opening World Cup matches in Group I, putting them in good shape to advance to the knockout round.

Mbappe scored twice to lead France to its 3-1 victory over Senegal on June 17. Meanwhile, Norway star Erling Haaland had a pair of goals as well in a 4-1 win over Iraq on June 16.

World Cup Group I schedule​


The two group leaders swap opponents on Monday, with France taking on Iraq in Philadelphia and Norway facing Senegal at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
