Jan. 10—GRAND FORKS — Just as the UND football coaching staff is losing a former University of Minnesota wide receiver, the Fighting Hawks are gaining another.
UND announced Saturday former Gopher K.J. Maye will be the team's wide receivers coach, filling the role held by Malik Bradshaw in 2025.
Last week, UND lost offensive coordinator Isaac Fruechte to Minnesota, where he played wide receiver in college.
Maye comes to Grand Forks after serving as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of North Alabama for one season.
"K.J. adds experience to our staff in both coaching and recruiting," UND head coach Eric Schmidt said. "He is an excellent teacher and relentless recruiter. He has ties through the Midwest and into the southern states, as well."
Prior to his collegiate coaching experience, Maye spent five seasons coaching in the Mobile County Public School System, including serving as an offensive coordinator.
Maye also brings professional playing experience, having spent time in the NFL and CFL. He had stints with the New York Giants, Tennessee Titans, New England Patriots and Edmonton Eskimos.
A 2016 graduate with a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Minnesota, Maye played four seasons with the Golden Gophers and earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors in his senior campaign after finishing with 73 catches, 773 yards and five touchdowns.
UND is expected to announce a new offensive coordinator soon to replace Fruechte, who will coach wide receivers at his alma mater. The Herald reported earlier this week that Danny Freund has emerged as the leading candidate for the position.
Freund, a former UND quarterback and offensive coordinator, spent the 2024 season at South Dakota State and the 2025 season at Washington State.
