Sunday was a sad end to yet another historic season for the UNC women's lacrosse team, which lost 14-11 to Northwestern in the NCAA Championship game.
North Carolina carried an 11-9 advantage into the final frame, but Northwestern rattled off five consecutive goals to win.
Despite the Tar Heels' loss, superstar Chloe Humphrey achieved a pair of milestones. Humphrey's two championship game goals gave her 109 for the season, tying Northwestern's Madison Taylor single-season goals record. Humphrey also earned Most Outstanding Player honors, an ode to her historic sophomore campaign.
Humphrey ended Year Two with 159 points, adding 50 assists to her whopping goal total. Humphrey reached the 10-point mark five times this season, most recently in UNC's 17-6, NCAA Tournament win over Clemson on May 10.
Good news: barring a transfer, UNC gets Humphrey back for two more seasons. She's now firmly in the North Carolina GOAT discussion, with the likes of Michael Jordan, Tyler Hansbrough and Lawrence Taylor.
The Tar Heels lose 10 players to graduation this offseason, but most of their star power comes from underclassmen. Attacker Addison Pattillo (63 goals, 14 assists), who finished second behind Humphrey in goals and total points, will be a junior next year. Betty Nelson, one of the sport's best goalies (72 saves, 21 starts, 18 wins), will also be a junior.
It's shocking Humphrey didn't break Taylor's record, considering she previously totaled 15 NCAA Tournament goals before Sunday, but nothing for her to be disappointed about. UNC will be right back in the Championship Game next spring, with Humphrey at the forefront of it.
