The Dallas Cowboys have the best interior lineman in the NFL in Tyler Smith. This isn’t hyperbole or homer-ism. Smith was literally voted as being number one in ESPN’s voting system recently.

In spite of this, it appears that they do not know where they are going to play him. Smith said so himself when the team arrived to training camp in Oxnard on Monday evening.

This is a little eyebrow-raising to say the least. Part of this is because Smith is such a stout guard as noted, but part of it is because to date the Cowboys have acted like there was no debate whatsoever and that he was a guard.

Consider the overall timeline since Smith was drafted in 2022, even:

  • Originally selected in the first round to play left guard
  • Played mostly left tackle while Tyron Smith was injured
  • Was fantastic, but kicked back inside when Tyron was healthy
  • Became the best guard in the NFL
  • Was paid that way (as the top one) early last season
  • Late in 2025 the Cowboys had him play left tackle
  • Afterwards they said that experiment, so to speak, was over

This sort of brings us to where we are now. All of it kind of feels like flip-flopping, but it is worth considering that maybe a bigger game is being played.

Consider that one of the other Tylers on the Cowboys offensive line is sort of in hot water. Not Tyler Booker, to be clear.

Tyler Guyton does play left tackle and is very clearly fighting to have that sentence maintain its truth into the regular season. Perhaps this is the Cowboys doing what they can to stir the pot in the name of motivating Guyton, or maybe they really are considering moving Smith one more time.

What do you think?
