President Trump said he plans to attend the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden to support his hometown Knicks.

“Boy, what a team, they win all their games,” Trump told reporters Wednesday. “They have some great players. I think I’ll be going to one of the games. Yeah, I was invited by numerous people and [Knicks owner] Jim [Dolan], and I think I’ll be going.

“It’s great to see it, the Knicks have really suffered for years.”

The news was first reported Tuesday byThe Athletic.

The Knicks, winners of 11 straight playoff games, will host Games 3 & 4 of the NBA Finals at the Garden on June 8 & 10 against either the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder or the San Antonio Spurs.

The Knicks are making their first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1999. The franchise hasn’t won a title since 1973.

“We don’t know if President Trump is coming to the Finals, but the President of the United States - no matter who is in office - is always welcome at all our venues,” an MSG spokesman told NJ Advance Media.

When Trump appeared at the U.S. Open men’s final last September, his presence caused a big delay and long lines due to enhanced security. A similar scenario would likely unfold at the Garden.

The Thunder lead the Western Conference Finals 3-2 after Tuesday’s 127-114 victory at home.

After sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals, the Knicks are in the midst of an eight-day rest ahead of the start of the NBA Finals on June 3 in either Oklahoma City or San Antonio.

Trump said he had planned to go to a potential Game 5 against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday, but that game never happened because the Knicks swept the series.

“I was going to go on Wednesday, but they closed it out very quickly,” Trump said.

An appearance by Mr. Trump at Madison Square Garden would be the latest incidence of a high-profile sports event serving as a backdrop for his presidency. Mr. Trump last year showed up at the Super Bowl, the Daytona 500, the U.S. Open men’s final and a Yankees game. He is currently erecting an octagonal cage on the South Lawn of the White House for an Ultimate Fighting Championship match on his birthday next month. He has maintained friendships with the leaders of sports organizations, including Dana White, the head of the U.F.C., to galvanize support in the “manosphere.”

The Athletic also underscored Trump’s friendship with Dolan, who has donated to Trump’s campaigns and told ESPN in 2018 he got married at Mar-a-Lago.

“I’m a member of Mar-a-Lago, and I support him as a friend,” Mr. Dolan said. “And you don’t have to agree with everything that he’s doing in order to support him. And he’s, by the way, our president, and I don’t understand people who wish our president to do badly. Why would you wish your president to do badly? It’s like wishing that your milkman will bring you sour milk.”
