The PIAA 2A wrestling championships opened, Thursday, March 5, at the Giant Center in Hershey. It was a hot start for a trio of Somerset County wrestlers.

Berlin Brothersvalley junior Lukas Smith opened preliminary competition at 127 pounds with commanding 11-3 major decision over Saegertown's Milan Harrison. Smith led 7-2 after one period. He recorded a takedown in the third to seal the win.

He takes on top seed Freddy Bachmann of Faith Christian Academy in the first round.

Smith's teammate, Dawson Shaffer began his PIAA championships with a 6-2 decision over Northwestern Lehigh's Chase Sukanick in the 152-pound prelims. The Rockwood sophomore student-athlete who competes in a co-op with Berlin, scored a takedown in both the first and second period to secure the victory.

Shaffer tangles with Frazier's Jonah Erdely in the first round.

North Star junior Kasey Yoder made quick work of Northeast Bradford's Asher Kolesar in his 189-pound preliminary round match. Yoder notched a fall in 3:49.

Meyersdale junior Cooper Porter squares off with Warrior Run's Max Wirnsberger in the first round.
